Do dogs have a sense of humor?

We may lovingly describe our dogs as loving, playful, or mischievous, but have you ever heard yourself say, “my dog has a great sense of humor”! Have you ever wondered if playfulness is the same thing as humor? If we look at similarities between different animals, we will recognize one that stands out the most: playfulness. Our pets have their unique way of conveying emotions and telling us what mood they are in.

Most dogs do silly antics to make their parents laugh. They may be doing it to get our attention because they receive positive reinforcement from us in the shape of a reward. You may find yourself laughing when your dog falls on the floor and rolls with her/his tongue out. Do they have a goofy expression that you just love? The fact that these behaviours are learned tell us how intelligent our furry loved ones are. According to American Kennel Club, Researchers at the Laboratory Animal Refinement & Enrichment Forum (LAREF) suggest that an animal may display what we think of as a sense of humor to get a response.

Which breeds are the most playful?

As we know, different breeds have their unique personalities and playfulness may just depend on the breed of your dog. Your pooch may indicate feelings of playfulness and happiness in different ways. They may tilt their head in a certain way, drop on the floor with their legs in the air or pant in a way that evokes a sense of energy.

Still wondering how to tell if your dog is trying to be funny? Dogs show a lot of teeth when they smile. They also wag their tail a lot when they are excited! And no matter how well mannered your furry friend is, when they are very happy and playful, they love to intrude and get your attention by nudging constantly. Some cats and dogs love playing hide and seek with their parents. They may also hide under a table or chair and pounce when you walk by. Have you noticed a fake guilty expression on your pet’s face? It is their way of showing amusement and happiness!

Here are some of the most playful breeds:
